I'm starting to think that by "inner piece" you
mean the part that rotates within the OAG's body
proper, i.e., the piece that allows the camera to
be rotated with respect to the pick-off prism (by
loosening three knurled thumbscrews). That's what
the outer part of the T-ring clamps to (im *my*
units, at least). This piece is indeed different
in my two OAGs, but it looks very much like one is
simply an improved design. Both "pieces" can
accomodate Canon, Olympus and Pentax T-rings (the
outer parts, of course). I haven't tried a Nikon
(I don't use mine for A-P). What I assume is the
older design does not prevent the camera from
moving slightly in the direction of the optical
axis when the three screws are loosened. I have
to be extra careful to ensure the camera is
pushed firmly against the OAG when I tighten the
screws. There is very little play with the other
"piece" if the screws are barely loosened enough
to rotate the camera. (Any play at all, I realize,
is bad.)

(As you can see, I am assuming we can hold a civil
discussion in APML. If you don't feel you can,
let me know and I'll stop.)
