Stephen Pitt is a very reputable astro-imager.
Mike Unsold is doing spectacular work with Canon digital cameras

and has written some very good software for doing so.
Another digital expert is Johannes Schedler at
http://panther-observatory.com/
There's no doubt that it is possible to get competitive-quality images with
these cameras. Obviously, Stephen is on his way. In fact, I would say that
his M31 is very close if not equal to the Unsold/Schedler stuff. And when
you consider that the Canon 10D gives you 3072 x 2048 pixels, in color, for
$1499, it's clear that a lot of people will be willing to get on the
learning curve. I got one for wildlife imaging, for example:

and I have just about retired my Nikon film equipment to back-up status. And
I'm tempted to try a bit of astro-imaging with it also.
