Hmmm. When I first started out in AP, about two long years ago (and before I
knew about this list), I bought the HP Photosmart S20. And I have to say
that I am very happy with it. I have not had any of the problems that others
are describing associated with it. In fact, the only problem I've ever had
with it was that once it gave me a row of spurious pixels, but a
recalibration cleared that right up. I've not had any problems with random
pixels lighting up or such.
Granted, it is a lower-end scanner and its resolution is limited to 2400 dpi
max, but it is not unusable for AP. If you look at any of the photos on my
web site, say what you will about them, but I don't think you'll find any
problems attributable to the scanner on any of them.
Now my next scanner (if any) will be a step up from the HP unit, but I don't
think it's fair to say that the HP S20 is not any good for AP.
