RE: [APML] Lumicon out of business

I am sure that Sept 11 had some effect but I think it was relatively
minor. I think there are two main reasons for their decline. The first
was when Dr Jack Marling started losing interest and moved out of the
business. From that point the business lost his inspiration and
leadership. The second main reason (probably connected to the first) was
that they did not move with the times. A huge proportion of their original
success was bound up with the film world, and of course there has been huge
shrinkage in that market. The writing was on the wall from about 1995
onwards and somehow or other they needed to start shifting their business
towards the CCD world and to try to re-discover some of their original
innovation in that market. I am sure they had thought about this, but
without Jack Marling's innovation and leadership I suspect they couldn't
find a way. A sign that things were going wrong was when they became a
dealership for other products.

It's very sad because they were an excellent company, always gave excellent
service, and had a range of truly innovative products.
