George,

My sprintscan is the same, albeit it died a few years ago.  The case has a
silvered reflector on the back, but I suspect its more for heat reflection
than light.  the scan sensor looks directly at the flourescent tubes
surface, not a reflector.  And yes, the clip is for a spare bulb.  Just
before mine stopped working, the scans started showing yellow bars in the
negative scans which were some sort of hot spots in the tube showing up as
streaks.

I have just received a sprintscan 35 that I bought off e-bay and while
struggling with my adaptec SCSI card (I need more IRQ's and DMA's) I had
a brief look at the scanner. When you lift the access cover off the
front should there be anything other than the plastic case to reflect
light towards the medium being scanned?
I see two aluminum clips but their size seems to indicate that they are
a spare bulb holder.
