I don't know when PS started supporting 48-bit TIFF, I know verion 6
does. LZW compression is a potential problem with any program that
handles TIFF, but I don't know whether PS 5.0LE vs 5.5 will have the
problem. You could certainly ask them to save them as uncompressed
TIFF to see if it helps.

I would also be a little surprised if it were not possible to ask PS
to save the image in a format compatible with an older version of PS.

As Richard Klappal suggested, look at buying Picture Works Pro; I did
and am quite happy with it, even if I am a (nearly) rabid
anti-Microsoft person :-)

It won't do everything that PhotoShop does, but for image processing
it will actually do more than PhotoShop does. PS does very little
with a 48-bit image since it does nearly everything via layers and
layers are not allowed for 48-bit images. PWP doesn't use layers for
anything (well, sort of) but everything it does is available for
48-bit images. I recently took some non-astronomical photos I took at
an outing in a local park and was able to mask and enhance the sky to
pull out the cloud structure without affecting the rest of the
image---all still at 48-bits.
