Re: [APML] LCD flat-panel monitors and digital processing

Hi Daniel,
I've tested some very good quality LCD monitor (also 19") and I've found that they are extremely unreliable for astronomical images.
I've done a coarse photometric test on some CRT and LCD and I've found that:
  • CRT have a non linear S-shaped emission curve while LCD have a very linear one. All CRT I've tested have a very similar and overlapping non linear curve.
  • But LCD have a extremely bright black point, the same light intensity on a CRT would be about half the dinamical range (i.e. 128 on 8 bit scale)
So, for the second reason, I don't recommend using LCD for astro work.

Hey all, I'm in need of a new monitor for my computer and I was thinking about getting an LCD flat-panel monitor.  The problem is I'm not sure how they perform copared to CRT monitors when processing astro images.  I 've tried it on my 3-year old laptop but the images always looked like crap when I view them on my desktop.  Have they changed any or will I still have these difficulties.  Anyone out there use an LCD or can give me any benefits/drawbacks to switching.  Thanks. Daniel
