Re: [APML] Mew M17 image

Hi Joe:
Why did you expect the exposures to be shorter with the SCT than the refractor?  Aperture doesn't affect exposure with extended objects, it only depends on the f/ratio. Actually, 20 minutes at f/6.5 is not terribly short for such a bright object. You may get more detail in the fainter surrounding nebulosity with 45 or 60 minutes but you'll have to be careful not to burn out the central area --- maybe combine long and short exposures with a mask protecting the inner area from burn out. If your present slide shows more data in the faint areas but you get burn out in the center with stretching, do a selection in Photoshop with the lasso tool, invert (so the center is excluded) and then stretch the periphery some more.
Good luck!

Thanks Steve and Bert,
This set of images where the first with my C11 and I was surprised by how long the exposures needed to be.
I was shooting with my 5" refractor and expected the exposures with the C11 to be much shorter. I will definitely
go with a longer exposure next time, with the trees in my yard it will need to wait until next year.
I also noticed the star ghost on some other images. I was having some problems with my ST-4 running away at the
time and thought that I had sticking relays, but this doesn't look like the same symptoms. I just don't think I
would have bumped the scope on other images on the same night. The color on the raw slide show a dark red nebula,
but I was afraid of pushing it to far.
Thanks, Joe.

Hi Joe:
M17 colors are tough! They seem to vary a lot from person to person. You can check out mine at
http://www.astronomy-images.com/images/Nebulas/m17-Ha-RGB.CCD.htm and you'll see that mine are redder, yours more orange. But if you go to Google/Images and look at a bunch of M17s you'll probably see a very wide variety of shadings.

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion an the colors in my new M17 image? This image was taken with a
C11 SCT @f/6.5 on Kodak E200 slide film, 20 minute exposure.

Thanks, Joe Schaefer
