Thank you fellows for advising me on how to get my file directory to show
the "details" option, but allas I have to report that I have already done
what you all suggested and the problem persists.

The odd thing is that when I select the details option and the window that
is supposed to show the files is blank, at the same time the vertical scroll
on the right of the screen is showing there are a finite number of files
there, even if I can't see them.  When I click on different folders, the
slider on the scroll bar changes length, indicating it is trying to display
differing numbers of files between different folders.  Very frustrating.  I
think Windows is broke!
