Herm,

My shot (http://people.ne.mediaone.net/mbendaniel/gallery/astro/auriga.html) was inspired by (http://www.scienceandart.com/photoauriga.htm). Bill Fletcher published an article in S&T about how he uses a diffusion filter on the camera lens to get this effect.

In my image, the bright stars were tiny and did not look much different from the dimmer stars, especially at web rez. Therefore it was very difficult to identify the constellation.

I used the Photoshop Elliptical Marquee Tool to mark out feathered circles around each star. Then I created a curves layer which takes in the selection as its mask. I boosted the lower ends of the curves.
