[APML] Monitor bright/contrast gamma...

Guys I'm still struggling with this, and have you noticed that Chuck's grayscale looks different on everyone's sight who has cloned it?

Could someone get practical and in the ballpark with me? I have a standard tube Compaq monitor. My zero brightness is far away from black, is that right? Contrast seems far more important in setting the picture, with brightness as a sort of comfort fine-tune control? Of course the conditions vary in day and night, but can anyone give me some feedback as to what their settings in a nice dark room are?

I seem to go between 60-90% Contrast and 25-75% Brightness, and that's just crazy! Adobe gamma doesn't help me, anyone know of a good website pattern or if I can reach a consensus from you, I'll stick with it. I need a standard for processing!!

Thanks!
