Re: [APML] LX 90 for Astrophotography ?

Simon,

While I have no experience with the mounts you describe, I've had success
with the LX-90. I am very much a beginner (<6 month experience), but I feel
the LX-90 is very solid and capable.

It has no PEC, but the periodic error present is very smooth and predictable
(i.e. no lurching or jerking). With autoguiding, the lack of PEC is a
non-issue IMO.

No mirror lock, but I've found very little image shift in focusing (~10
arcsec) and I assume that would be an absolute worse case for mirror flop.
As long as you end focusing CCW, it becomes basically a non-issue.

My web page has some examples of what the LX-90 is capable of by a complete
newbie. The Orion photo is from the first roll of film I ever tried and is
manually guided. The M51 slide portion was 1 hour manually guided. The
Trifid (my favorite) was autoguided with my ST-5.

I don't have a flip mirror, nor do I have a desire for one. Using high
precision mode, I can consistently get the object in the FOV of even the
tiny ST-5.

If you're looking for a solid, relatively inexpensive astrophotography
platform, I don't think there's a better bang for the buck.
