I think it is an "open secret" that any dealer on-line in any
forum (newsgroups, e-mail lists, etc) is participating in some of the best
free advertising around (moi included).
However, i also find the best way to keep your pulse on what is
happening out there is to keep up with these same lists, so staying on a
few places on the internet, is, IMO, more of a necessity than a right
anymore. As long as one is not actively after business, and you are
up-front about your intentions (no madam, I do not want to marry you, I
just want to bed you :), then people are free to act accordingly.

For what it is worth, you may also find some dealers/suppliers
on-line due to personal interest as well. This may not be a good example,
but do you imagine for sake of argument that Roland wants to increase the
waiting list for his refractors by being on this list? Now some people
might perfer to see him chained to his worksho, slaving away 24 hours a
day instead of being on this list if it means speeding up delivery times,
but hey, the guy probally deserves a 15min break at least once a day.
