Jonathan,

      Thank you for an in depth look at the problem... having lived in Turkey 
for many years I can only reiterate the amazing hospitality I have been shown 
by Turks from time to time... since my father spoke fluent Turkish we would 
go places where the average tourist would "fear to tread"... in all cases we 
were accepted like "long lost family members" as you put it. Out in the 
villages we once were watching how the peasants were cleaning fillbert 
nuts... my father asked if he could buy some... the peasant came over with 
this huge bag of nuts and said "Here, this is for you and the Americans..." 
My father tried to pay for the nuts, the peasant refused to even think of it. 
When asked why he insisted, the peasant replied, "Well... if I came to 
America, wouldn't you do the same thing???"

     I would like to think that the answer is yes.
