RE: [APML] Fixer expiration
I use all my chemistry as one shot use, since I can remain consistant in
my developing this way. If you buy fixer in cpncentrated liquid form,
such as Ilford or Agfa fixers, in the bottle, they should last darned near
forever if you mix up your solution as you need it.
If you dump the whole gallon into a 5 gallon pail and make up 5 gallons of
stock solution all at once, then yes, you might have problems.
While fixer does not go back, once in a while, after a very long time, it
might offer you other problem. I had a partial jug of Ilford conentrate
fixer I forgt about at the back of my darkroom, so i pulled it out, tested
a strip fo film, all seemed fine, so I used it.
however, my negatives after fixing came out with all these tiny little
white flecks on them, almost impossible to wash off th eemulsion side
without doing damage.
To make a long story short, the fixer had started to crystalize, with the
particles resting on the bottom. It was like white dust in liquid suspension.
Now like I said, this bottle of open fix had been sitting there for
probally a couple of years, but it shows you, even if it is still
chemically active, ther might be other problems.
