Simple fixer test:    1. smell it.  Bad fixer sulfurizes... if you smell  
sulfur or rotten eggs, throw it out.   2.  Take a piece of unprocessed film 
and swish it around in  the suspect fixer.... it should clear in half the 
time of the process... if you fix for 3 minutes.... it should clear the film 
in 1.5. Marginal fixer might be sulfurizing but can still clear the film.... 
use it once and discard.
