Ray:
Sounds like the original Technicolor cameras of the 1940's and 50's.
These were large studio cameras that used one imaging lens but separated the
light into CMY colors onto three separate 8x10 sheets of film. The three
sheets of film were then used to make dye transfer prints. A lot of magazine
covers were photographed this way. I don't think they ever attempted to use
them for astrophotography.
