Fortunately you don't need truly dark skies to do astrophotography. To get
that in all directions you need to be at least 200 miles from any city of
any size. There are not many locations that qualify these days.

As Tony said, the high Sierra is very dark. At 10,000' I found the
reflection of the Milky Way off of glaciers to be annoyingly bright.<g>
I think most people on this list would be thrilled with most locations
in the Sierra foothills and the added bonus is no dew on most nights.
