It's for B&W photography of nebula at the H-alpha line. I've also found
it useful for photographing dark nebula with my lens because the lens
produces smaller stars when limited just to red light.

The filter will allow you to expose about 6 times as long compared to no
filter to reach the same sky fog level, thus recording much more
nebulosity.
