Not being able to see the problem I would have to agree with the assumption
of some lens problem. You said that it was a zoom, does this problem occur
on both ends of the zoom range? It is not unusual in some lenses to have
odd shaped stars in the corners. But it is usually in ALL corners. Your
description lends credence to some lens alignment problems, which wouldn't
surprise me in a zoom lens.
Lens problems that can be hard to discern in "normal" photos can become
quite obvious when you shoot a star field.
