The gas and ash eruptions at Mount St. Helens were far too small to put
material into the stratosphere. The "big one" in 1980 was the type and size
of eruption that would create such a situation, but not the recent
eruptions. There are, however, several other volcanoes currently erupting
around the world that may have had more of an effect.
Coincidentally, I was at St. Helens with Steve O'Meara and
photographed/filmed 2 of the 3 relatively significant eruptions (10/4 and
10/5). While they were exciting, they were relatively small. The volcano was
just "clearing it's throat" - literally - as the fresh magma rising blew out
gas and old ash accumulated in and around the lava dome.
Congratulations to Jerry on an absolutely fantastic lunar eclipse image. The
best I've ever seen!
Take care,
Scott
