I think that you are not following step 4 correctly. There is an icon on the Layers palette called "layer mask". If you click on it, while having the "Alt" key pressed, the image becomes blanck. Then, if you paste in there, the new image is shown as a grayscale, where black means that nothing will be applied there, and white that all will be applied.
BTW, you can mask any layer... images or processes (like a curves layer).
You can also try to do the same with PixInsight... Duplicate the image, or extract the luminance, select it as a mask, and then make use of the processes you want, including PixelMath (to combine the image with itself adding, multiplying, etc).
