[APML] Exposing and scanning slide film

Hey All,

Some things on my mind. Presently, I am looking at Jerry's book, so
it's possible some of these things will resolve themselves, still I'd
like to hear about some real-world experiences.

For the first time ever I shot a roll of E200 a couple weeks ago.
Results are mixed. It did well on the Double Cluster, lousy on emission
nebulae in general, and somewhere in the middle on galaxies (M31 &
M33). It did OK on NGC 7023 (Iris Nebula), but I haven't got around to
working with that yet, and it is not an emission area. The one shot
that did well was a 150 minute shot of the HH-Flame area. Possibly, it
did well because this area is not real faint and it WAS a long
exposure. I got little of IC 405, IC 410, IC 1848, IC 2118. Maybe these
objects are just too obscure for my 4" f/8 scope.

What I'd like to hear about is whether I should stick to brighter
objects, whether I should have had the film 'push processed', or
whether I need to scan differently when dealing with slide film. Or
should I just stick to Supra, hey I got 26 rolls left.

Some specific questions are:

1. If I expose like I normally do with exposures from 90-160 minutes,
should I ask for push-processing? If so, should I use shorter exposure
times?

2. Are these objects too faint for me and my equipment to capture
effectively? My general feeling is that my equipment has performed
flawlessly. That leads me to believe that the problem lies in an area
that I control, like scanning, processing, etc..

3. Should I try different scan settings? I noticed when I set up the
dialog, I had the option of using 'under-exposed slide film'. I didn't
know what to choose, so I went with 'color slide film', and pretty much
did raw scans. Should I be doing something different here?

4. Is there a particular type of DSO that E200 does well with? Should I
try it again, or get back to Supra?

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,
Alan
