RE: [APML] To mount, or not (slide film)
Hi Alan,
I'm going to go against the grain here, because I've never had a problem with slides coming back miscut. I don't think it's an issue with today's labs.
I believe most of today's slide developing labs automate the process of cutting and mounting slides, guiding off of the first frame when they make their cuts and mount the slides. If you take a normal picture or two on the first frames then you'll be ok if you get them cut and mounted at the lab. This applies to labs that wouldn't be considered the best, as well. Over the past couple of years I've been using all sorts of labs, from among the best in the LA area to including sending them off through the local Wal-Mart (which happens to give the best results and is the one I use the most), and have never had a miscut slide. Negatives are a different story, as they are usually manually cut.
I think the only time you'd really need to cut and mount the slides yourself is if you took the roll of film out of the camera (happens) and put it back in later to finish exposing the roll.
One of the big cons of cutting and mounting the slides yourself would have to be the greatly increased chance of scratching the crud outta them.
Hope this helps,
Jason

Bill sent this reply to a question I asked a couple weeks ago in a
different thread.
The E200 in question is curently at the lab, and I requested that it
simply be developed, and not cut. However, I see my scanner (SS4000)has
a holder that mounted slides will fit into. Should I go ahead and have
the mounting done? Why, or why not?
Thanks,
Alan
