Re: [APML] To mount, or not (slide film)

Alan,

A topical point as I have been contemplating this issue as well. I have
adopted the recommendation of not having the negatives cut in the lab and
recently followed the advice included in "Photoshop for Astrophotographers"
and started mounting my film in slide mounts. I do this for both negatives
and for transparencies as well. My Minolta scanner has a holder which will
take four slides.

The only problem that I found with the lab doing the mounting is twofold.
One is that they may cut the frames in the wrong place and the second that I
found with the lab that I used is that there was no frame ladling on the
mounts so I was unsure as to which frame was which.

I found that it is an easy job, though a little time consuming, to cut and
mount the slides yourself. I had purchased a slide cutter which I have
stopped using as I found that it was scratching the surface of the film. I
now use a sharp blade and a firm surface to cut each frame. This system
seems to be working fine.

Clear skies,
Rodney Watters
