Thanks, Steve. The prominences are dim compared to the surface details,
so that's why my shot is a composite. You might want to try bracketing
your exposure to see if the prominences will come out in a longer shot
with your camera.
By "digi cam", do you mean a digital camera? I haven't tried it myself
but it occurred to me that you really ought to use a monochrome imager for
solar H-alpha. In a color imager, you will typically throw away 3/4 of
your pixels because they are green or blue. It's possible the green
pixels have a broad passband and will have some low level signal in them,
but who knows what happens when the built-in software tries to
interpolate? So my thought is if you are going to use a digital camera,
use one with a big chip (lots of pixels) and fill the FOV with the sun.
Then downsample the image by a factor of two to get "real" resolution.
Anyway keep trying. It's certainly possible to get good H-alpha solar
shots since there are a lot on the web and they are all done digitally.
