Stay away from the STR 80 for photography (its great for visual, day or
night)..
I you will definitely get a flatter field, no vignetting, no blue flaring
and pinpoint stars edge to edge with a Nikon 300mm EDIF (ED: ed glass, IF:
internal focus) telephoto lens. I have seen them in Ebay for around $150.
Pretty fast at f4.5 too. There are several astrophotography web pages that
showcase this lens. These lenses outperform many telescopes doing
photography, yet I don't see too many people using them.

I beleive Dr. Gendler uses the f2.8 version of the 300mm for spectacular
ccd photography.
