Hello!
I wanted to take the time to introduce myself to the mailing list and also make sure I can post to it OK.
I'm an up-and-coming optical engineer who started working for the Navy a little over 3 years ago (out in the Mojave desert, of all places), although my official degree is MS in Electrical Engineering. Just for clarification, I'm a civilian employee for Dept. of Navy so I don't wear a uniform, but I do get government discount rates at hotels!
Anyways, before my student loan payments kicked in (read: before I became poor again after college), I took out a small fortune and bought an LX90 to continue a childhood love of stuff in the night sky. I think my most vivid memories of astronomy as a kid are seeing Halley's Comet in '86, and also *not* seeing the NASA(?) attempt to make a man-made comet one Christmas in the mid-late '80s. Anybody remember that?
About a year and a half ago I bought a Minolta and started taking astrophotography shots. I upgraded to an Olympus OM-1 (I love that camera!) not too long after and got the rest of the basic equipment required for astrophotography shots over this past year and a half....I was totally decked out maybe six months ago. So, I'm really just starting down this road. It's a great hobby, though, allowing me to combine three big interests: mechanics (I tinker like any good engineer should), astronomy, and optical engineering.
I've got a handful of shots: Some I like and some I don't, but check them out for yourself: http://www1.iwvisp.com/opticman. I go out every chance I can get on dark weekends, because fortunately for the time being, my fiance (who's an engineer here, also) likes it...she'll either come with or stay home and work on homework for her online courses.
I will read the APML emails with interest!
