Re: [APML] Registar
Hi George,
Generation of the RegiStar license key is done automatically by machine,
not by human. It does not matter what time of the day or night you make the
request, and the response with a new key is always within seconds. Since
first purchasing RegiStar I have requested somewhere around 8 new license
keys with no problem at all. I have RegiStar running on three computers
but they have all been upgraded, which requires a new key, and I needed a
new key for an NT machine after installing a new HD controller card - a
substantial enough change to alter the 'signature' of the machine, I
guess. If it's a straight re-installation on the same machine then the
original license key can be used.
IMO this is a much quicker and cleaner process than the registration
process with MaximDL, for example. In my experience there have *always*
been problems and if you allow the process to take its own sweet time you
can wait anywhere between 1-2 weeks for a new license key. By really
rattling the cage it should be possible to get a new key within a couple of
days.
Also the MaximDL 3.x upgrade cost quite a lot of money whereas I have paid
once only for RegiStar and they have come out with some nice enhancements
since the original version.
To answer some other recent questions: RegiStar supports all types of
images - it makes no difference whether it's film or CCD - I have used it
many times to align CCD images. It works with 16 bit images and also fully
supports the FITS astronomical image format. As far as I am aware there is
no image size limit (other than constraints imposed by the computer
hardware environment) - it certainly handles TIFF images of around 500Mb.
It's surprisingly versatile too - I have used it to accurately align
hundreds of webcam lunar images where it treated the highlighted peaks of
craters as "stars". The alignment was far more accurate than Registax for
example, because RegiStar was able to correct scaling distortions caused by
atmospheric turbulence.
