Thanks for the advice.
I finally got the SprintScan 4000 working.
It turned out be the Belkin cable I bought to connect the SS 4000 to the 
Apadtec 2930CU SCSI card. The cable that came with the SS 4000 did not 
match the SCSI card port.

And thanks to Belkin for the frustration.
