This is a very interesting argument! I've asked my oculist about lasik &C and he said me that they go to correct only 3-4mm of the cornea, so only a central part of the eye. This
is not a problem in normal use, but for an amatour astronomer this is important, we'd like to use 7-8mm of aperture! A further consideration is that after such a correction it's
nearly impossible to correct only a part of the eye with glasses!
I also had LASIK in September 2001. According to all the literature I read the area of correction varies with the machine being used. This also affects the cost. The high end B&L machine they used on me and several other astronomer/friends of mine corrects to 10mm diameter! It's true though that many older machines max at 5 or 6mm. By the way my vision is now 20/15 in each eye! For me this has been a wonderful experience!
