RE: [APML] Matt's S&T Cover
Your statement about film images seems rather dated- We have used plenty of
CCD images for the cover- Rob Gendler and Bill M. spring to mind right off
the bat (although I can't remember how to spell Bill's last name). Those
images are printed full page. Oh, and we use 175 line screen. We also use
plenty of CCD images in other areas of the magazine, and print many 1/2 to
full page size. Mike Cook had a wonderful one just recently. But also
consider that most images from observatories nowadays are all digital. there
really isn't any film being used for research by professionals anymore.
Typically if we use a David Malin shot on the cover, it was prouced 10 to 20
years ago.

S&T is far from unique in their preference for film compared to digital
images. Especially for a full-size cover shot.
Lots of magazines will not even consider digital images. I run into this
with nature photography all the time. Some of it is prejudice, which is
beginning to erode. Part of it is a desire for images that can be
cropped, still screen at 300 or 240 dpi, and be larger than a 4"x5".
For a cover shot, you need something like a 300 or 240 screen at 8"x10".
The typical CCD image doesn't approach 300 resolution much beyond about
2"x3". Especially if the image was binned.
S&T has been willing to display CCD images inside the magazine, with
appropriate sizes of a few square inches. It looks like they use 180
screen for those images, which provides reasonable quality.

Thanks, Rob and Jeff.
I think S&T is very interested in publishing film shots, because:
1) I think S&T Gallery wants to maintain a non-elitist image. The lowest
cost option for attractive deep sky pix is still 35mm film.
2) People are nostalgic about film, kind of like the nostalgia for
wooden boats. David Malin says that digital cameras "have no soul".
3) Film is still the most efficient medium for aesthetic wide field
imaging (>10° FOV).
