RE: [APML] Picture Resolution For Web
Hello
Actually the display size is what we are talking about not the resolution.
Even the manufacturers call it resolution but it is not resolution, it is
pixel width. The "resolution" of most monitors is 72 to 100 pixels per inch
depending on the dot pitch of the monitor and the various formulas to
convert dot pitch to resolution. If the most common monitor size was 19"
then 1600X1200 would be a good screen size, utilizing most of the monitor's
resolution capability. If you set the monitor to 800X600 you are just
wasting its resolution potential and resampling the image down to a smaller
size, discarding detail information. The fact that the most common screen
size is 800X600 would indicate that most people use 15 inch monitors and/or
they don't have a clue about resolution, and I think it has to do with how
comfortable they are with font size. For most people it is a matter of
getting a comfortable, readable font size and it is confusing to readjust
font size in Windows so they just adjust image size (pixel width of screen).
Anyway, almost every commercial web site I see is 800X600 but since your
target audience for astrophotos is somewhat more computer savy I would guess
that the vast majority of visitors to an astrophoto site would be using the
higher screen sizes, just a guess of course.
