Based on statistics from the "Luminous Landscape" 
<http://luminous-landscape.com/about/stats.shtml>, the most common screen resolution is 
1024x768.  Here are the stats from that site.

1280 X 1024 15%
1152 X 864 7%
1600 X 1200 5%
1400 X 1050 1%
640 X 480 .5%
960 X 780 .2%
Other Combined 9%

An image can be no larger than about 1000x568 in order to see the whole image without scrolling 
on a 1024x768 screen when viewed with a typical web browser.  Most images will be limited by 
height instead of width if your goal is to make the whole image visible without scrolling.

I usually use the "JPEG High" (60%) setting when saving images for the web.  Some images require 
less compression to avoid the "jelly" artifacts.
