THANK YOU Jerry, Tim, Grant, Roland and Howard for those detailed and caring
answers!

Yes I will give this unit to my ex after doing yet another full-restore and
removing all the big programs. Agreed, Windows 98 stinks! I cuss Bill G.
everyday. Which is the best?  I think the cd burner really wacked it out for
good. The disk activity light pulses at a constant 2 sec. even when
nothing's open and everything's weird. Sleep mode will not wake monitor back
up w/o reboot, etc. Downloads w/ updated drivers and fixes only convolutes
the issue.

It's times like these that I feel the world's gone mad. There I was w/ a new
Japanese burner, software from Karlsbad, Germany, getting no help from 2
mean, gang banger cust. serv. reps in Irvine, CA when I called from NJ.
Compaq wouldn't help because 3rd party ware was involved. Compaq is now even
more lost in HP, and service is done at Radio Shack! Even the CompUSA store
has a voice menu and despite my upset and semi-irate appeal to a store
manager to call me, they never did! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I did learn one tidbit from Earthlink. Right clicking on My Computer and
looking under the Performance tab under Properties, shows how much system %
is available which is particularly critical for web use. Many unused
programs insinuate themself at start up and s/b kept from auto-opening.
Start/Run/type and enter MSCONFIG to bring you to the Start Up tab, which
shows how many unnecessay things are opening. Then all you need do is
uncheck the flotsam and restart.

Feel free to write direct with favorite brands, vendors, OSs. A friend says
Motherboard Express has great live support and a 3-yr. warranty of good
stuff.
