John -  Sure.  Here's the quick and dirty version.
- I took the milky way image as the background, adjusted the saturation and
contrast
- Sky in the daylight shot was removed by using the Lasso tool which
selected the sky only
- Sky was cut from the daylight shot, resulting image was left with only the
canyon walls etc.
- Daylight image was used as Layer 1 and moved to the desired location over
the star field
- Daylight image was adjusted for brightness and contrast
- Flattened the image
- Used the lasso tool to select the rim of the canyon and then used the blur
function to soften the edge between the sky and rock.
- Final brightness, contrast and saturation was adjusted
