[APML] Exposure times?

On paper, I've designed a camera exposure timer that will do 1 to 999 
minutes or 1 to 999 seconds, using a small solenoid to depress a cable 
release to a mechanical camera. A 3-digit display would show the selected 
exposure time. Current drain is fairly low with 74HC/CD4K CMOS logic and 
the solenoid I'm considering. I have two questions:

1. Are the two exposure ranges sufficient?
2. Does anyone even use mechanical cameras and film anymore?

I'm likely to get a PC board made and kluge up a prototype. Comments are 
appreciated.
