I knew someone would ask that question.
I guess there was a loose fiber clinging to the rear surface of the field flattener.
Because I'm using slide film, the stars burn out easily on long exposures. Perhaps I should try to get spikes deliberately on some future shots with that refractor. John Boudreau suggested that a diffraction mask (two crossed wires) at the front of the scope would spread out the starlight.
