Roland...
On many models of SLR's the timer 'pre-fires' the mirror a split second
before the shutter opens. As a Canon aficionado, I can't say with certainity
about the Nikon in question. I use both mirror lock-up and the shutter release
timer on my Ftb-ql's... I'm totally hands free for anything faster than 'Bulb'
setting. Same for my OM 1's which are used through the scope only. Doing this
without regard to specific shutter speeds has greatly improved my success rate
from beginning efforts... I'd have to say it's a good habit to get into for
long focal length shots that don't require a shutter release cable.
Good luck on photographing a complete lunation... I have about 2/3 of the
phases complete myself... one of these years I'll scan them in so more folks
can see them!
Best...
