On an F2, F5, D1H, and other SLRs, mirror lockup is the ability to use a
separate lever or button to swing the SLR mirror out of the way before
taking the shot. The self-timer trick is a way to do this if the camera
lacks a mirror lockup lever.
Of course, the other way to go is to use a Leica M-camera with a good 135mm
lens, but you're limited to piggyback shots and 21mm-135mm on this
rangefinder camera. No mirror vibration, though.
