Isn't amazing how that works :-)
The important thing is that there are different tools for different
people. If you want to take the best astro photos you can,
you won't use a general purpose digital camera but rather a specially
designed camera like the ST10E. You also will probably spend a good
deal of money on the optics and mount and while you are at it, you will
probably want to move to Montana or an island near the equator where you
can image in clear light free skies.
However, the Canon D60 and the Nikon D100 may be good tools for bringing
more people into the astrophotography field with digital
cameras. Clearly the sensors in those bodies spank the point
and shoots in image quality. Both have support for
noise removal of long exposures but being battery powered, you probably
are not going to be running hour long exposures with them, however
stacking several 5 minute exposures may be within reason and produce good
enough images to make astrophotographers at that level happy.
I want to get a decent clock drive that can turn my D100 with my
AF-S 300mm F2.8 + TC-14E for an effective 630mm F4.0 lens at a pretty
grainless, noise free ISO 800. I bet I can get some good
images with that set up, if I only had a mount (clicking the ruby
slippers three times....)
But alas the budgets just not there for it.
Thanks,
Rob
