I have a Nikon 300mm f4.5 lens (non-ED) that performs well wide open.
there is vignetting, but it is able to be compensated for with vignette
reduction techniques (see my article in October 2001 S&T) or Matt
BenDaniel's method.  if stopped down to F5.6, there is no vignetting.
I'm considering selling it along with a matching 72mm Minus Violet
filter if any APMLer is interested. I just don't do film imaging with it
anymore, and it is gathering dust (not on the objective though).  It
costs a fraction as much as the f2.8 versions.
