Just seeing a "difference" doesn't really mean you are seeing 16 bit color.
I didn't realize that a monitor could even display that depth and the
statement about the bit depth ability of they eye is correct, maybe less
than 8 bit but it varies. I think there is a lot of extrapolation going on
in the software, hardware, etc. That said, I think you have more creative
latitude and can get a better result working with 16 bits but I don't think
anyone could look at a random image on a monitor and tell you if it is 8 or
16 bit color.
