Not much. My point was that Loke can easily achieve "sky fog limit" with his Schmidt whereas you would have a hard time doing so at f/8. The definition of "sky fog limit" is rather nebulous and qualitative, at least from my perspective, but that wasn't my point.
I don't see why Loke can't make a decent stab at good color balance by exposing each channel for best S/N and then finding the correct scaling of these images to produce a good gray for a known target. This is what you have done for exposure times. I can't think of any reason why this would not work in a similar way for scaling.
