Yes, quite a bit of planning.

There were a lot of problems...cancelled flights, field rotation (ground
not 100% solid), wind, clouds, more clouds, flexure in the piggyback
bracket (greased threads helped), photo lab screw-up, underexposure,
overexposure, military fighter plane exercises (complete with flares),
scope tracking into mount, etc.

The clouds in particular put me in a bad mood the entire time I was
there.  It's amazing I came away with anything.

The travel issues and Rob's article in November S&T made me waver re:
film.
