Matt,

You could set up a virtual desktop of a higher resolution while maintaining
a lower physical resolution.  This might help you out.  I'm not sure what OS
you are using, but some versions of Windows allow this.  There might be some
3rd party software that allows this as well.

I've gone that route.

1. Going back and forth to highest resolution is a pain.  My eyes are
bad, so I like to keep the display at medium rez.
2. Even highest screen rez is less than I'd want.
