Steve, The blue ring is from the focal reducing lense in the OAG, I think. Take a look at this one I took of M45 with the focal reducing lense in place. It shows the same ring. I think it's pretty though and makes it more interesting. Sort of like the difraction spikes caused by a newt reflector.  http://flyboy999.freeyellow.com/Star%20Clusters/M45_jpg.htm

For those SCT users... I wondered on the horsehead shot where the blue ring on the righthand side of the image came from?  Some kind of internal reflection between mirror and corrector plate?  Take a look:
