I do
spend some time on polar alignment before each session. I have found
that using my STV really aid in getting a quick and very accurate polar
alignment. Basically, I place the STV head in the tube and get it
roughly aligned to the RA and DEC axis. I then do a standard drift
alignment using the "Drive Accuracy" function of the STV. If the tube
is nearly polar aligned (using the polar scope), the STV's graphs will show
most of the error in one axis (depending if the tube is pointed East or
South). I simply adjust Alt/Az until the graph shows little to no
error. I usually go back and forth between east and south two or
three times... Periodic error will show up, so it pays to wait a few
minutes to determine if it is drift or
PE.
