I use this method with my Nikon 300mm f/2.8.  Chris Heapy made me the 
correct size riser block.  It works well.  For my 400mm f/3.5 Nikon I 
needed a larger ring for the front element and Chris Heapy made an 
appropriate sized ring for me.
