Steve,

Your scanning is very good now.  The raw Dumbell is not clipped. 
Congratulations.

For processing the image, I'd add in a bit of green and blue by lifting
the middle of the curves.

Also, the program bgsmooth might be helpful.

Start with parameters "4 100" on the post-processed .TIF and experiment
from there.
IMO your objective should be to soften the grain, not to eliminate it.
